My Mental Health Playlist
1-800-273-8255 by Logic, Alessia Cara, and Khalid This song is like a public service announcement saying that you are not alone. The title of the song is a crisis line for mental health. I love this song because it shows the difficult process of being isolated in despair to seeing the light and changing perspective. This is a rap song and there isn't always a lot of representation for suicide prevention in this genre, so this song is really powerful for society.
Scars To Your Beautiful by Alessia Cara This song is about seeing yourself as beautiful and having confidence. Although it addresses mainly eating disorders, the pain of insecurity can lead to suicidal behavior. I also love the way it talks about uniqueness and unity in society. Alessia calls everyone, though mainly girls, to fight against the expectations of the culture.
get well soon by Ariana Grande This song was written after a really difficult time in Ariana's life. The song is dedicated to the people who died at an event at her show; there was a mass shooter. Ariana really struggled after this traumatic event, she didn't create music for a while. It shows the perseverance through mental illness. I love the vulnerability and realness Ariana writes in this song.
idontwannabeyouanymore by Billie Eilish This song was written about pushing against social norms and being your own person. Many times people commit suicide because they feel unseen and not themselves. Peer pressure is overwhelming at times and this song shows that you can be different. Billie sings about the power of finding yourself and setting boundaries.
I Will Be Found (Lost At Sea) by John Mayer This song talks about the journey of feeling broken and finding your way back. It shows how mental health can be very personal and there is hope even when you feel lost. I love how John is honest about his emotions but believes in his life. He says that even if no one is looking for him, he will be found. Often times, recovery is a personal choice that then requires support by the people around you.
In My Blood by Shawn Mendes This song is about feeling anxiety and not knowing if you can make it through this journey. Shawn describes the pain of mental illness but decides that he can't give up. It is a honest song that ends with hope. I think many people relate to having a moment where they question if they should stay alive, but Shawn stands up for his life and says giving up isn't in his blood.
